BECOMING A NEW IKM MEMBER

IKM is a professional body first established way back in 1967. The Chemists Act was passed in 1975 and it requires all practicing chemists to be registered with IKM and this has given us due recognition as a professional. The Membership of the Institute is open to all persons over 21 years old with a recognized degree in chemistry or equivalent academic qualification in chemistry or a specialized discipline associated with chemistry and the requisite practical experience.

MEMBERSHIP GRADES

Membership of the Institute shall be one of three grades namely

Fellow – FMIC
Member – MMIC
Licentiate – LMIC

PROCESS OF AN APPLICATION

All application for new membership and upgrading of membership will be processed by the Membership Admission Committee for the suitability of the applicant and the endorsement

Instructions for Applicants

  1. Prepare scanned copies (softcopy) of the following documents.
  2. All documents must be certified by Commissioner of Oath OR Solicitor OR Government Officer in the Management and Professional Group OR IKM Branch Chairman OR IKM Executive Director.
    a) National Registration Identity Card (for Malaysian) or Passport (for Non Malaysian)
    b) Academic Certificates – Degree, Postgraduate (Master, PhD) and/or LMIC certificate
    c) Academic Transcripts – Degree, Postgraduate (Master, PhD)
  3. Please make sure your name & email is correct when you fill in the application form.
  4. Upload a recent passport-size photo and complete the payment.
  5. Send 3 recent passport-size photos (hardcopy) to IKM Secretariat via courier / postal service. Please write your full name at the back of each photo.

Note:
A person shall, before admission as a Licentiate, satisfy the Council that he has—
(a) a degree or any equivalent academic qualification, in chemistry or in any specialized discipline associated with chemistry from one of the examinations listed in the Second Schedule;
(b) practical experience in chemistry of not less than one year for a degree or its equivalent; and
(c) attained twenty-one years of age.

A person shall, before admission as a Member, satisfy the Council that he has—
(a) a degree or any equivalent academic qualification, in chemistry or in any specialized discipline associated with chemistry from one of the examinations listed in the Second Schedule;
(b) practical experience in chemistry of not less than three years for a degree or its equivalent or not less than one year for a masters or higher degree or its equivalent; and
(c) attained twenty-one years of age.

QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS (SECOND SCHEDULE OF THE CHEMISTS ACT)
The qualifying examinations of the Institute are:
1. The final examinations of the Institute.
2. Any examination anywhere or part thereof recognized by the Government, after consultation with the Institute, as being equivalent to or higher than the final examinations of the Institute.
