IKM has grown in tandem with the rapid development of Malaysia to become a well-established and strong professional organization recognized both locally and internationally.

OUR BACKGROUND

Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), or the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, is a statutory professional organization incorporated under the Chemists Act 1975 on 1st November 1977 and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (MOSTI).

The Institute was earlier inaugurated on 8th April 1967 with 27 founding members and subsequently registered under the Societies Act 1966 on 13th October 1967.

IKM has grown in tandem with the rapid development of Malaysia to become a well-established and strong professional organization recognized both locally and internationally. Membership of IKM comes from both the manufacturing and service sectors, universities and other institutions of higher learning, research and development institutions, and government and education sectors. With membership of more than 5,700 in August 2023, IKM enjoys a prominent place among the professional scientific organization in Malaysia. The Institute is also playing a leading role in the development of chemistry in Malaysia.

VISION OF THE INSTITUTE

A Globally Recognised Institution for Advancing Chemistry and Professionalism in Chemistry

IKM, being the professional body for regulating and advancing chemistry and the profession of chemistry in Malaysia shall uphold and improve the professionalism of its members. The Institute aims to play a bigger and more prominent role nationally and internationally in advancing chemistry. Therefore, it will further widen and broaden its networking and cooperation with other professional institutions locally and globally.

MISSION OF THE INSTITUTE

The institute shall regulate and promote the professionalism in chemistry towards sustainable socio-economic development of the nation

IKM shall promote public awareness, appreciation and advancement of chemistry towards sustainable socio-economic development of Malaysia, including conserving our natural environment and resources for the future generations. IKM shall provide continuous professional development for its stakeholders through education, training, research and publications, whilst regulating the practice of chemistry in Malaysia.

IKM will engage its stakeholders; government, industry and academia, and networking with national and international organisations towards becoming a globally recognised institution.

ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE

The Institute carries out the whole range of professional, educational, social and promotional activities, including the following:

  • Membership Examinations
  • Chemistry Conferences including the Malaysian International Chemical Congress (MICC), Regional Symposium on Total Laboratory Management (QSEL), Seminars and Workshops
  • Professional Courses and Continuing Education Programmes
  • Chemistry Publications
  • Technical and Professional Visits, and Study Tour
  • Activities on Promoting Public Understanding and Appreciation of Chemistry including the Chemistry and Technology Information Series (CATIS) and Malaysia Chemistry Festival
  • Malaysian National Chemistry Quiz (K3M)
  • Social Functions including the annual Malam Kimia
