GRADES OF MEMBERSHIP
Section 17 of the Chemists Act reads as follows:
Membership of the Institute shall be one of three
grades, namely Fellow, Member,
and Licentiate.
A person shall, before admission as a Fellow,
satisfy the Council that he has -
a degree or any equivalent academic
qualification, in chemistry or in any
specialized discipline associated with
chemistry from one of the examinations
listed
in the Second Schedule;
practical experience in chemistry of not
less than ten years;
made a substantial contribution to
chemistry; and
attained thirty-three years of age or
such lesser age as the Council may, in
any special case, allow
A person shall, before admission as a Member,
satisfy the Council that he has -
a degree or any equivalent academic
qualification, in chemistry or in any
specialized discipline associated with
chemistry from one of the examinations
listed in
the Second Schedule;
practical experience in chemistry of not
less than three years for a degree or
its
equivalent or not less than one year for
a master or higher degree or its
equivalent; and
attained twenty-one years of age.
A person shall, before admission as a
Licentiate, satisfy the Council that he has -
a degree or any equivalent academic
qualification, in chemistry or in any
specialized discipline associated with
chemistry from one of the examinations
listed in the Second Schedule;
practical experience in chemistry of not
less than one year for a degree or its
equivalent or its equivalent; and
attained twenty-one years of age.

Any examination anywhere or part thereof recognized by the
Government, after consultation with
the Institute, as being equivalent to or higher than the final
examinations of the Institute.
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP RETENTION Rule 5 of the Chemists Rules 2024 reads as follows:
Every application for retention of membership in
register shall be made to the Council in any manner
and form determined by the Council and accompanied
by a retention of membership fee of one hundred
ringgit on or before 31
January of the said year.
If the application for the retention of membership
made after 31
January of the said year, an
additional processing fee of fifty ringgit shall
be
imposed.
The retention of membership certificate shall be in
a manner and form determined by the Council.
Where no application for retention of membership
made by the member before 30 June of
the said year, his name will be removed from the
register.
The Council may, on a written request, reduce or
waive of retention of membership fee for a period of
twelve months or more under circumstances of such
member is pursuing education within or outside the
country or for any other reason as the Council
thinks necessary.
The Council may waive a retention of membership fee
for any member who is over the age of
sixty and has been a member for a
continuous period of not
less than fifteen years.
