President’s New Year Message 2022
As we usher in the New Year, I would like to wishes all our members a happy New Year 2022. After two years being ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are placing high expectations on 2022. I believed that we have managed to “tame” the pandemic with more than 95% of the adult population being double vaccinated and booster shots are being administered now. We just hope that the number of cases will gradually go down to double and finally single digits in the next few months.
Very unfortunately in late December, we are being affected by the horrible floods that inundated many areas and causing loss of lives and havocs to so many Malaysians. But I believe that this is the case of extreme weather brought about by climate change. There is no way that we can control the climate except to control and mitigate the situation with proper flood control and landslides management. We must also manage our water resources properly to manage drought and dry weather situations.
As for 2022, we are looking towards a busy and productive year. For the first quarter, we shall have the Symposium on Best Practices & Innovation in Laboratory Management (BPI-Lab) on 24 – 25 March to be followed by the Malaysian National Chemistry Convention (MNCC) 2022 on 26 March. MNCC will comprise two events, one is the Forum on Chemistry & Climate Change in the morning and the other is IKM 55th Annual General Meeting (55AGM) in the afternoon.
We shall also have the Continuous Professional Development programmes starting in January and Kuiz Kimia Kebangsaan Malaysia (K3M) in September 2022. At the end of the year, we will have our Malam Kimia – IKM Awards Presentation Night 2022 on 2nd December. On 24 – 26th November, we propose to organise the International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry (ICPAC) 2022 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This is our annual scientific event that is being held annually in ASEAN countries.
We are also preparing for events in 2023 and beyond. In 2023, we shall organise the 16th Asian Conference on Analytical Sciences (ASIANALYSIS XVI) on 10 – 12th October 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in conjunction with LabAsia 2023. In July 2023, we shall also organise the 9th Network of Inter-Asian Chemistry Educators (9NICE) Conference in Kuching, Sarawak.
We also have two very large international scientific events coming. One is IUPAC 2025 which comprises the IUPAC 53rd General Assembly (53GA) and the 50th World Chemistry Congress (50WCC). IUPAC 2025 is to be held in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur and is expected to attract more than 3,500 delegates from all over the world. The other is MACRO 2026 which is the 51st IUPAC World Polymer Congress. MACRO 2026 will be held in Kuching, Sarawak in 2026 and is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates.
So, for the next five years, we shall have our hands full with many scientific events being held in Malaysia. We believe that these scientific meetings will further develop and advance our science, technology and innovation. They will also bring in the much-needed socio-economic development to Malaysia. For our IKM members, these will provide you with lots of opportunity to further your education, research, work or career. We are also sure that these events will further enhance IKM as an international scientific organisation.
Have the best of 2022.
