CHEMISTS ACT 1975

The Chemists Act 1975 gave recognition to the professional practice of chemistry in Malaysia. IKM was incorporated under the Act to regulate and promote the practice of the profession of chemistry in Malaysia.

CHEMISTS (AMENDMENT) ACT 2015

The Chemists (Amendment) Act 2015 was gazetted on 24th Aug 2015 and comes into operation on 1st November 2015.

Section 2,7,9,14,15,17,18,19,23,25,27 and the First Schedule of the Principal Act were amended with the following objectives:

  • To provide for IKM to expand its functions;
  • To rename the grades of membership and to amend the qualification and working experience requirements to be elected to the various grades of IKM membership; circumstances as to indicate or to be likely to lead persons to refer that he is a registered chemist; and
  • To provide more efficient and effective administration and management of IKM functions and activities.

One of the amendments is that the Associate grade of membership is amended to Member and the initials AMIC which stands for Associate of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry is now amended to MMIC or Member of Malaysian Institute of Chemistry. The other grades of membership namely Licentiate and Fellow remain the same. There are also changes in the minimum number of years of working experience required for admission as a Licentiate or Member.

CHEMISTS RULES 2024

The CHEMISTS RULES 2024 was published in the government gazette on the 5th day of June 2024. This means that these new Rules will be put into practice immediately.

This is the first time that the Chemists (General) Rules 1977 was amended . The main purpose is to revise and update the current practice and development in the chemistry profession at present time. These are some of the major highlights of the 2024 Rules:

Under Rule 6 Title of a member of the Institute – The member may use the abbreviated title “ChM” before his name.

Under Subrule 16(b) Qualification to sit for the final examinations – The following persons are qualified to sit for the final examinations – (b) graduates with a degree in science and technology other than degree in chemistry.

Under Subrule 5(2) Retention of membership – If the application of the retention of membership is made after 31 January of the said year, an additional processing fee of fifty ringgit shall be imposed.
